* 1850mm Y Standards ... c
ut them in half = 2 x 925 mm pieces per Y Standard ...

* Your tunnel should ideally run East to West in it's length … to ensure even exposure to the sun …

* Hammer the cut pieces of the Y Standards into the ground at exactly 2 meters apart on the length of the tunnel, and 4,5 to 5 meters apart on the width of the tunnel … at 5m the tunnel height will be 2m in the centre ... by narrowing the tunnel it will give you more height ...

* The Y Standards must be very secure in the ground, to a depth of 475 mm, leaving 450 mm above the ground …

* The Y Standards on the extremities of the tunnel, that's front and back, should be angled outwards, east and west, by 5 degrees … this will increase the shade cloth tension, from front to back of the tunnel … the other Y Standards should be hammered into the ground as straight as possible …

* The bottom part of the
Y of all Y Standards must all be facing towards the back of the tunnel … this will facilitate easy installation of the support poles …

* Using an angle grinder now cut off the flared bits as a result of hammering the Y Standards into the ground … create an inverted V shape with your cuts, but not a sharp point, as this could cause harm to people and animals, plus penetrate the support poles when you insert them
again these cuts will facilitate the installation of the support poles … you might like to cover them with plastic bottles for extra protection ...

* On the exterior of the Y Standards right around the tunnel, dig a trench of 200mm deep and 200mm wide to allow the shade cloth to be buried below ground level … using a string-line gives the best results ...

* After clearing the interior floor of the tunnel, it is recommended that you layer crumbled horse manure, then wood shavings, then straw or hay … each layer to a depth of approx 50 mm … giving you a mulch layer of 150mm … floor sweepings from stables are usually free ...

This mulch layer will stop most weeds and grass from regrowing in the tunnel and will also supply food for the next 6 months for the beneficial microbes, which are in the 200 mm of topsoil …

* When clearing the floor, it is recommended that you do
NOT use any weed killer nor pesticides, nor do you need to turn over the topsoil, as you do not want to disturb the beneficial microbes that are in the ground …

Now you will be ready to install your tunnel on arrival …
